      What causes toothaches?

Most people experience a toothache at least once in their lives. A toothache can be a sharp, dull or throbbing pain. It can happen only when you’re eating, or it can occur in or around your teeth. Some toothaches happen all the time, while some come and go. Nevertheless, it’s important that your dentist takes a look at your problem tooth as soon as possible.

You don’t have to suffer through the pain

At Battery Hill Dental, your comfort is our number one priority. We can prescribe medication to help you get rid of all kinds of toothaches as well as provide you with the right treatment so we can stop the pain and make your tooth healthy again.

        What causes toothaches?

        Cracked or broken tooth

A fractured tooth caused by injury or by biting down on something hard can be painful. In fact, if the fracture has made its way to the nerves, the pain can be excruciating.

        Loose fillings or restorations

Fillings cover sensitive parts of the tooth such as holes, grooves and fractures. When these fillings are damaged, the tooth can be exposed to temperatures and bacteria, leading to tooth sensitivity and tooth ache.

        Abscessed tooth

When a tooth decay is left untreated, the damage can extend to the root underneath your tooth, making it and the surrounding gums prone to infection. This causes the area to be swollen and painful, giving you that throbbing pain.

        Tooth decay

Poor dental hygiene is one of the main reasons for tooth decay, the main culprit behind toothaches. When food and drink particles get stuck on your teeth for a long time, bacteria and acids start to form, damaging your tooth until they form the painful holes in your tooth called cavities.

        Gum disease

When you have red, bleeding gums accompanied by a dull pain on one or more teeth, then you may have gum disease, which can lead to tooth aches and tooth loss.
